About The Work
When my daughter was very little, she had a favorite blanket. I believe all children do.
Grandma lived several hours away and we would travel across the prairies to see her as often as possible. We would make lots of stops along the way to stretch tiny legs and relieve bored baby minds.
One time, in the late summer, on a stop while driving home from Grandma’s, my daughter’s blanket came out of the truck with us, on a little adventure. Without our knowing, that very special blanket was left on the side of the road, near a prairie field, in the grass.
It wasn’t noticed missing until bedtime. I thought of it there, in a strange place, on the side of the road, this other “family member” of ours that was just a square piece of textile, abandoned and alone.
Daddy drove several hours, backtracking almost the entire drive, looking for the lost blanket. This experience made me think about how objects take on meaning in our lives. It made me wonder about loss in a different way, a misplaced way, It made me feel longing.
I wanted to paint that longing and represent it in a beautiful way.
